a promise

And when I am grown up,
I will never be on time,
and I will never carry an umbrella.
(If it rains, I will get wet.)
And I will not know the names of any birds,
only their songs,
or the authors of the books I read.

I will reserve the right
to pluck those specks
that loom the largest
in the eye of the mind.

I will forget all the facts
and remember the truth.

One, For The Road

sitting in the silence
maybe we're not islands
we're more like icebergs melting as the world is heating up

brace for the titanic
still waiting for the panic
i guess that nothing ever hits you like you think it should

i left you on your bed
you left me all unread
i live inside my head
forget the things we said
remember where instead

like a horse that's underwater
i'm wondering why bother
however long it lasts i'll never overwrite the past

i really am the same kid
who always fought with david
great works of art are made by people who live in the world

i sent my favorite song
you took the words all wrong
don't ever stay too long
only when we're gone
the party can go on
walk on to the lawn
not wandering, but lost
this star that love has crossed

a question hangs in the air
"why'd you really come here"
to prove that i have interests other than staying alive

thought during the meeting
is there any meaning
my favorite writers killed themselves before the end could come

once the story's told
it suddenly grows old:
"a hollow painted gold"
"the day was bright but cold"
"our lives are bought and sold"
"a hand that i can hold"
search for a new take
an ode to a headache
some clever turn of phrase
some convoluted maze
to keep me lost for days

try to see the colors
try to learn from others
try to finally make something that stands up on its own

live for the connections
thankful for directions
they tell me who i am so i can say that i am free
